Tursunov fights back to win
Dmitry Tursunov’s 46 57 63 64 62 win over Victor Hanescu gave Russia an unassailable lead over Romania and a place in the quarterfinals of the 2009 Davis Cup by BNP Paribas. This will mark Russia’s tenth appearance in the quarterfinals of the competition, while Romania records another bitter loss in the first round, making this its fourth consecutive one.
And while a 4-1 final score line, including Teimuraz Gabashvili’s win over Victor Crivoi in the dead rubber, might suggest that it was smooth sailing for the Russians, as Tursunov pointed out “it is difficult to predict how difficult a tie is going to be, no matter who the adversary is.” The Romanians certainly proved that the lack of top-ranked players does not necessarily mean a complete whitewash.
All looked on course for the Russians on the first day after victories by Marat Safin and Mikhail Youzhny against Crivoi and Hanescu respectively. And while Hanescu was far from his expected form when he went down in straight sets to Youzhny, Crivoi’s spirited performance against Marat Safin was a point of pride for the Romanian delegation. And following Horia Tecau and Marius Copil’s five-set thriller win over Safin and Tursunov on Saturday, the Romanians would have been forgiven for thinking they could turn things completely around on the final day.
